The work of therapy doesn't end when a session does. Clients carry what they're working on into the rest of their week — and clinicians often carry a quiet worry about how they're doing. Staying connected between visits can be deeply supportive. It can also, without the right boundaries, become a slow leak in your energy.
The goal isn't to be always available. It's to build a few small, sustainable habits that help clients feel held between sessions while keeping your own limits intact.
Set the expectation early
Most between-session stress comes from ambiguity. When a client isn't sure whether they can message you — or when they'll hear back — they either over-reach or suffer in silence. A short, clear agreement solves both. Let clients know how to reach you, what you'll respond to, and your typical turnaround. Predictability is its own kind of care.
Make the small touches easy
Continuity doesn't require long messages. A brief check-in, a shared worksheet, or a reminder of the one thing you agreed to practice can do more than a paragraph. The lighter each touch is to send, the more consistently you'll actually do it.
- Send the next appointment and a one-line intention right after each session.
- Use secure messaging for logistics so personal channels stay off-limits.
- Let clients complete forms and reflections in their own time, in their language.
“Boundaries aren't the opposite of care. They're what make care sustainable enough to keep giving.”
Protect your off-hours on purpose
If you can see a client's message the moment it arrives, your nervous system treats every evening as potentially on-call. Decide when you check messages, and let a calm auto-response hold the space until then. Clients rarely need an instant reply — they need to trust that they haven't been forgotten.
A note on safety: between-session messaging is not a crisis channel, and it's worth saying so plainly to clients. Make sure everyone knows that in an emergency they should call or text 988 (in the U.S.) or go to the nearest emergency room.
Let your tools carry the weight
The most reliable between-session support isn't heroic effort — it's a system that quietly does the remembering for you. Automated reminders, shared documents, and a bilingual portal mean clients stay connected without you personally holding every thread. That's not less caring. It's care that lasts.
